Year 1

Our Kingfishers have been working hard and are settling back into their routines.

In English, there has been ‘something fishy’ going on in their current story. The group have been practising retelling and acting out the story using full sentences and descriptive language. Ask your children about the story – can they remember what happened? Can they use their storyteller voice to tell you the story? Can they use First, next, then, after that and finally to sequence their story?

In maths, the Kingfishers are continuing to delve deeper into number work to really secure their ‘number sense’ so that they can start to use their number knowledge to solve tricky problems. The group have been using vocabulary such as more than, less than, fewer, greater, most and least.

In computing the group used the ‘paint’ programme to draw self portraits. The Kingfishers love using the computer suite and will soon be moving onto their next unit all about using the keyboard and typing, now that we have mastered our mouse skills. The group have begun using Microsoft Word to build keyboard and typing skills and have really enjoyed persevering and exploring the different functions of the keyboard. The class now know how to type a capital letter and how to make spaces and full stops.

In PE the class have continued to have the opportunity for outdoor learning on a Thursday too. The group have been working on their flexibility and balance in their Yoga and gymnastics units and are enjoying learning about how our bodies work and how to keep them healthy. Some of the yoga poses can be challenging but the group didn't give up and are having fun learning to master them!

The Kingfishers have been discussing the seasonal qualities of winter during our science lessons and have also begun to look at a new topic all about materials. The groups first lesson was all about natural and human made materials and they had fun matching objects to their materials.

Great work Year 1!
